The Custom D&D Dice Making Process

The Custom D&D Dice Making Process

Here at Only Crits we're proud to offer bulk custom dice for small businesses, Kickstarters, weddings, or really any reason you might need some fun dice with your own twist. But having an idea for a cool set doesn't always directly translate to a perfect set, we have a process, and more options than you might know about! So today we're going to go through all the options for custom Only Crits dice, and explain the process.

Our Dice Material Options

You can get custom dice in any of the same materials that we offer dice in, which includes:

  • Resin Dice
  • Metal Dice
  • Hollow Metal Dice
  • Acrylic Dice
  • Gemstone Dice

However, just because we offer all of those materials doesn't mean that they're necessarily the right fit for you. For instance, we cannot perfectly customize the color of gemstone dice, the best we can do is find stone that resembles the color you're searching for, but we can perfectly match colors using resin or acrylic which might make them the right choice.

Design Choices

Your choices for your dice designs are essentially limitless. They are custom after all! There are some exceptions, like we mentioned before perfectly matching colors is something we cannot do with stone dice, but can do with the rest of the options. We can also generally accommodate any custom faces you'd like, so long as the image isn't so detailed, or put on such a small face, that it becomes unrecognizable. Doing fine linework on the tiny triangle that makes up a D20 side can sometimes turn a clever design into a confusing mess. If you do want an image that is relatively intricate, we generally suggest placing it on a face of the D6 in the set. In addition to customizing faces, some materials also have stylistic options.

Acrylic

  • Rounded or sharp edges

Resin

  • Rounded or sharp edges
  • Opaque or translucent

It may not seem like a lot but all of these little choices add up to custom dice that are entirely yours. But how to get from these choices to the final dice set?

The Process

What we need to know from you is the following:

  • How many dice or dice sets you'd like to order
  • What material you'd like the dice to be
  • What color or colors you'd like the dice to be
  • What color you'd like the numbers on the dice to be
  • The image or images you want on custom faces
  • Which number or numbers you'd like replaced with custom faces
  • Sharp or rounded edges
  • Translucent or opaque
  • Any non-regular sizes, shapes, or number of dice such as pyramid d4s or round d100s instead of d00s
  • If you'd like any packaging for them

We are more than happy to work through all of those details with you, there's no need to have every answer prepared before reaching out.

Once we've hammered out your design preferences we go away and get down to work on a digital mockup and a pricing quote for you. We hammer out the final details based on how the mockups turn out. Then it's on to the sample phase.

The Dice Samples

Once you're happy with the price and the mockups we create dice samples based on the exact specifications we've agreed on. This means creating a unique and singular set for you and sending them over so that you can go over them in-person. This is your last chance to change anything about your custom dice, and it's vital you let us know if there are any issues or if you want anything changed because once the samples have been approved we move on to the full manufacturing run.

The Full Dice Run

The full manufacturing run can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 12 weeks depending on the complexity of the dice and the volume which you've ordered. We keep you up to date on how the process is going and if we run into any delays of any kind, then once the dice are produced we package them up with your choice of package (custom options available) and send them over to you!

To Sum Up

If you come to us with an idea for some custom dice, we can turn them into a reality. It'll take some time and some decisions about the details of your dice, but anything is possible and we love bringing your dice ideas to light.
